Luminus Devices Inc of Woburn, MA, USA has received five new US patents for its PhlatLight (Photonic Lattice Light Source) LED technology, raising the total number of patents granted to 11. Luminus says it has invested over $10m in IP development: its portfolio now covers high-power LED chips, packaging and optical systems, and it has filed over 100 additional US and international patent applications.
Luminus’ proprietary PhlatLight product family is used in applications including projection TVs, LCD TVs, and other high-definition displays and lighting systems. The technology’s underlying photonic lattices direct the emitted photons through the surface of the LED, emitting substantially more light and in a narrower, collimated beam that is more readily collected and delivered to its target. This, combined with Luminus' packaging technology, enables more powerful solid-state light sources, it is claimed. The firm has also developed a cost-effective method of manufacturing PhlatLight LEDs in high volume.
“There has been a rapid increase in the market's adoption of our PhlatLight technology [for large-screen high-definition displays],” claims co-founder and chief technology officer Alexei Erchak. Luminus has ramped up shipments of chipsets, used in projection TVs offered by Samsung and NuVision. Its latest chipset, the PhlatLight PT120, is being mass produced for projection TVs with screen sizes as large as 61 inches, while its PT39 chipset is being used in LG Electronics' HS101 pocket projector, the brightest LED front projector in production.
However, the technology can be applied to other LED applications, some of which Luminus is exploring through collaborations and licensing agreements. “We continue to improve and expand the use of PhlatLight, uncovering new opportunities where PhlatLight technology is well suited to address a specific design challenge,” Erchak adds. “For example, we've found that many high-brightness applications benefit greatly from replacing hundreds or even thousands of LEDs with a single PhlatLight LED.”
