BIOS and Lumileds partner on human-centric lighting
Human-centric lighting (HCL) innovator BIOS (Biological Innovation and Optimization Systems LLC) of Carlsbad, CA (a spinoff from NASA) and lighting solutions provider Lumileds LLC of San Jose, CA, USA have joined forces to create a new SkyBlue LED that doubles previously available chip performance. The new 3030 mid-power LED is said to dramatically reduce the lumen per dollar development barrier facing luminaire manufacturers and eliminate a key barrier to bringing better, healthier lighting solutions to market.
Lumileds engineered the new LUXEON LED to deliver BIOS’ proprietary SkyBlue Circadian technology. Human cellular biology has recognized and reacted to natural blue-sky light for tens of thousands of years. Using science originated at NASA, BIOS created its SkyBlue Circadian technology, which engages with a non-visual photoreceptor in the eye. It is claimed that, during the day, SkyBlue strengthens the circadian rhythm, increases alertness, improves focus and boosts mood and that, in the evening, it creates a warmer atmosphere that promotes natural melatonin production, leading to a better night’s sleep.
Lumileds says that, through the relationship with BIOS, it brings its engineering, phosphor, manufacturing and solution expertise to the human-centric lighting ecosystem. “We are able to double lumen output in our 3030 package and enable system performance to increase from 110 to 160 lumens per Watt,” says Lumileds’ head of marketing Willem Sillevis-Smitt. “This can reduce the bill of materials, put utility rebates into play, and ultimately reduce end-user pricing,” he adds.
Now, the more than 30 BIOS Illuminated partners and those that have been waiting for HCL LED technology to cross the chasm can build their portfolios in this critical market with confidence in the LEDs, it is said. An expanding market will increase consumer selection, lower end-user costs and ultimately increase productivity, improve physical, mental and emotional well-being, and improve sleep quality for people around the world, it is reckoned.
“Our partnership with BIOS enables us to address the growing demand for high-performance lighting solutions that support circadian health,” comments Larry Chapin, senior product manager at H.E. Williams Inc, a BIOS Illuminated partner. “The relationship BIOS established with Lumileds will strengthen the supply chain, resulting in reduced lead times and greater flexibility for their OEM partners,” he adds.
