Ascent Solar Technologies Inc of Littleton, CO, USA, which develops copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film photovoltaic materials and modules, has entered into a definitive cooperation agreement with Icopal SAS of France, a member of the Icopal Group of Herlev, Denmark that supplies bitumen membranes for roofing.

The agreement focuses on the development of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing products for distribution by Icopal into the European marketplace.

Initially, Ascent intends to supply Icopal from its existing 1.5MW production line for the development, testing and certification of the BIPV products. The firms also envision subsequent demonstration-scale projects to validate performance and develop market demand.

“As an innovative company in flexible PV modules, Ascent Solar is a natural partner for Icopal for integration of Ascent’s products into Icopal’s flexible roofing membranes," says Bruno Fabvier of Icopal.

“Icopal is well positioned to harness the capabilities of our PV modules,” says Ascent ‘s VP of business development Joseph McCabe. “By working with European-based building material companies, there is an opportunity to develop higher-value BIPV markets in Europe.”

This latest cooperation agreement follows a similar agreement last week with Giscosa Sociedad Limitada of Spain, a manufacturer and distributor of rubber membranes for roofing.
