BluGlass awarded $5m in government funding

BluGlass Ltd of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia has been awarded up to $5m of Commonwealth Government funding over three years to assist the commercialization of its technology, on the basis that BluGlass matches the grant with its own expenditure.

BluGlass has secured the funding under the AusIndustry ‘Commercial Ready Grant’ Scheme (the Australian government’s flagship innovation program to assist local firms to develop pioneering products, processes and services).

BluGlass was spun off from Sydney’s Macquarie University in June 2005, with the university’s commercial arm, Macquarie Access, is a shareholder, and was listed on the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) in September 2006. The firm is commercializing patented remote plasma CVD (RPCVD) process technology for low-temperature deposition of gallium nitride onto large-area glass substrates (rather than conventional MOCVD on smaller and more costly 2-inch sapphire or silicon carbide wafers) using nitrogen (rather than more expensive and toxic ammonia). Independent analysis has found that the technology could achieve GaN cost savings of more than 48% at the wafer level and 10% at the LED device level compared with production systems in current use, the firm says.

In March BluGlass demonstrated the world’s first blue LED on glass, and in June scaled this up from 4-inch to 6-inch wafers. The firm aims to demonstrate that the technology can be applied at a commercial scale to manufacture low-cost, high-brightness LEDs and other GaN devices. It expects to then generate revenues through establishment of partnership agreements and technology licensing.

In a recent presentation to investors, CEO David Jordan said that BluGlass was meeting all key IPO milestones for the commercialization of its GaN technology, including the development of its manufacturing demonstration plant in Silverwater, Sydney and commercial reactor development with EMF Semiconductor Systems in Ireland.
