Aixtron AG of Aachen, Germany says that in second-quarter 2007 it received an order from THELEDS Co Ltd of Wonsam-Myun, Yognin-Si, South Korea for two Thomas Swan Close Coupled Showerhead (CCS) reactors.
The systems are being delivered in 19x2-inch wafer configuration and installed alongside the firm’s other CCS reactors for volume production of InGaN-based blue high-brightness LED chips. “THELEDS relies exclusively on the CCS reactor of the Aixtron group,” says Dr SangKee Shee, executive VP of THELEDS.
“In order to react to increased customer demand for high-brightness LED chips, we now have to expand our production capacity,” he adds.
“Shortly after we had acquired our first Thomas Swan CCS reactors we were able to ramp up to mass production very promptly. We have found it very easy to transfer our processes from one system to another, which is essential for fast production ramp up,” Shee adds.
Founded in February 2005, the firm began manufacturing GaN LED chips in June 2006, began establishing a new factory this May, and currently has a capacity of 30 million chips per month. In February, 0.4t sideview LEDs were qualified by Samsung Electronics' wireless division.
THELEDS’ current products are focused on blue LED chips for applications including back-light units (BLU) and lighting. Future products include InGaN-based UV and green LED chips as well as AlGaInP-based red LED chips, in addition to supplying epiwafers.

*Sanyo starts-up MOCVD system
Earlier this month, Aixtron announced the start-up of a new MOCVD system at Sanyo in Q2/2007, but due to a non-disclosure agreement could not divulge details of the model or the exact nature of its use. However, the company did say that the particular system is designed for the development and production of optoelectronic devices, and that it was installed at Tottori Sanyo Electric, a subsidiary of Sanyo in Tottori prefecture, Japan.
Sanyo is one of the world’s largest suppliers of AlGaInP red and AlGaAs infrared laser diodes, and was the first company to commercialize 635 nm AlGaInP laser diodes.See related items:
