At the end of last week WJ Communications Inc of San Jose, CA, USA, which designs and supplies RF products for the wireless infrastructure and RFID reader markets, announced the death from cancer on 22 September of Michael E. Holmstrom, who had been a member of the board of directors since July 2004.
Holmstrom was instrumental in guiding WJ through the company’s turnaround, according to president and CEO Bruce Diamond. “As chairman of our audit committee and member of our executive committee, Mike provided terrific oversight, council, and guidance,” Diamond added.
Holmstrom had over 35 years financial experience in the telecoms industry. Prior to 1996, Holmstrom held numerous senior management and consulting positions including VP of unregulated operations, CFO and then president of CP National Corp, executive-in-residence professor of business strategy at Texas A&M University, VP of financial and business planning at Pacific Telecom, and VP of finance at Alascom Inc. He was chief operating officer of Spectrum Network Systems Ltd in Sydney, Australia from 1996 to 1998, CFO for Atlantic Tele-Network in the US Virgin Islands from 1998 to 1999, senior VP and CFO at Alaska Communications Systems Group from 1999 to 2000, and CFO and then president of Electryon Inc from 2000 until March 2002. Most recently, Holmstrom was a director on several boards and provided financial consulting services.
WJ is currently seeking a replacement for Holmstrom on the board. His role on the audit committee and executive committee has been filled by director Cathy Lego.
