TriQuint celebrates 100 millionth transmit module

RF front-end IC maker TriQuint Semiconductor Inc of Hillsboro, OR, USA is celebrating shipping 100 million units of its family of GSM/GPRS and EDGE transmit (Tx) modules at the fifth anniversary of its European Design Center in Munich, Germany. The celebration is taking place this Wednesday at TriQuint Semiconductor GmbH, just across the street from this week's European Microwave Week (EuMW) exhibition.

Pioneered by the engineering staff in Munich, the modules represent an industry first, the firm claims, achieving a 6mm x 6mm footprint and cementing TriQuint’s position as a provider of highly integrated modules for wireless handsets. The modules allow cellular handset makers to replace several discrete parts with one integrated component (the complete front-end modules integrate multiple power amplifiers, filtering, control circuitry, the switch function and ESD protection).

“The establishment of the design center in Munich [in mid-2002, after acquiring the gallium arsenide business of Infineon Technologies] has helped TriQuint assemble a world-class engineering, technical and support team from all across Europe and has bolstered our GSM expertise,” says TriQuint Semiconductor GmbH’s managing director & sales director Graham Teague. “Today, we have a well-rounded technology portfolio which supports all key air interfaces, from cost-effective GSM/GPRS and CDMA2000, to high-performance EDGE, WEDGE and EV-DO.”

For the GSM/GPRS market, just last week TriQuint announced volume shipments of 5 million of its TQM6M4028E Quantum Tx modules to China’s ZTE Corp for use in Vodafone’s model 125 and 225 phones (designed for the ultra-low-cost market). The Quantum Tx module family was developed at the European Design Center.
