Jazz Technologies Inc of Newport Beach, CA, USA (formerly Acquicor Technology, Inc) says that, effective 30 March, Dr Shu Li is resigning as president and CEO of its subsidiary Jazz Semiconductor Inc (a wafer foundry focused mainly on specialty CMOS process technologies, including high-voltage CMOS, SiGe BiCMOS and RFCMOS for analog and mixed-signal devices). Jazz Technologies’ chairman and CEO Gil Amelio will assume Li’s duties and remain in the role for the foreseeable future.
Jazz Semiconductor was acquired late last September by Acquicor Technology. Acquicor was formed in August 2005 by Gilbert F. Amelio (former chairman and CEO of Apple and National Semiconductor Corp), together with Apple Computer Inc co-founder Steve Wozniak as chief technology officer, Ellen M. Hancock as chief operating officer and president (former chief technology officer of Apple and chief operating officer of National Semiconductor), with the purpose of to acquiring technology businesses.
Jazz Semiconductor was formed in 2002 as a joint venture between Conexant Systems Inc (which contributed its Newport Fab LLC wafer fabrication facility, and is now a fabless semiconductor company) and private equity firm The Carlyle Group (which invested $52m in a 55% controlling stake) to facilitate a transition from a captive manufacturing facility within Conexant to an independent wafer foundry.
Amelio was previously president of the Rockwell Communications Systems semiconductor manufacturing division of Rockwell International Corp (later spun-off as Conexant Systems Inc), where he was responsible for operation of the manufacturing facility that is now operated by Jazz.
“Shu has been with Jazz Semiconductor since its inception in 2002, and has overseen the company’s growth from just a few customers at the inception to more than 100 customers to date,” says Amelio. “Shu and his team have put a strong foundation into place,” he adds. “As Jazz undertakes this latest phase in its evolution, I will work side by side with the Jazz management team and our employees to ensure that a smooth transition occurs.”
