The market for GaN-based laser diodes will grow at a compounded average annual growth rate (CAAGR) of 103% through to 2011, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics in its report ‘Gallium Nitride Laser Diodes: Markets and Applications 2006-2011’. The consumer-based optical data storage market will dominate all other applications.
Traditionally strong manufacturers of consumer laser diodes such as Sharp and Sony are competing with incumbents and each other to reduce overall costs and drive the emergence of the merchant market. Principal applications will be in games consoles, PCs and home theatre; the latter finally becoming the dominant market as the two competing formats Blu-Ray and HD-DVD finally gain mass market acceptance, reckons Strategy Analytics.
