QPC Lasers Inc of Los Angeles suburb Sylmar, CA, USA has appointed Dr Tom Steele as director of market development to drive expansion for its growing medical business. QPC also manufactures high-brightness, high-power semiconductor lasers for the industrial and defense markets.
Steele is a laser industry veteran with 18 years of experience, with particular expertise in the bio-medical markets. Prior to joining QPC, he was director of marketing and North American commercial sales manager for Spectra Physics Lasers (acquired by Newport Corp in 2004) and was marketing manager for Lightwave Electronics (acquired by JDS Uniphase Corp in 2005). Steele has a PhD in physics from Stanford University.
“We continue to see a ramp in momentum for our medical lasers, winning orders from over 10 medical customers last quarter,” says Dr Paul Rudy, senior VP of marketing and sales. “As we accelerate the transition of our technology into commercial production for medical applications, Tom’s vast expertise of the medical marketplace will be a tremendous asset.”
The new orders are from medical customers in four countries in Europe, Asia and the USA, and span several applications (including dermatologic, ophthalmic, and surgical). More than half of the orders are from new customers. QPC says that this reflects the growing interest in its BrightLase Medical Modules, which offer high-brightness output (at specified wavelengths from 795nm to 1720nm) into small-core-diameter fiber (usable in minimally invasive procedures).
