Osram settles patent dispute as Citizen licenses white LED IP

Osram GmbH and its subsidiary Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH of Regensburg, Germany have signed an extensive license agreement that covers the use of its intellectual property in the white LED products of Citizen Electronics Co Ltd of Japan.

The agreement settles a lawsuit that Osram Opto Semiconductors filed against Citizen (in both Germany in 2005 and the USA in 2006) for violation of Osram’s white LED intellectual property rights (whereby white light is produced by converting blue light using a yellow converter).

Citizen is now granted the right against payment to use Osram intellectual property in white LEDs of all sizes, in all output categories and for all areas of application (e.g. in the automobile sector or for displays and keypads).

“We are pleased that this agreement signals the end of a dispute and that another renowned LED manufacturer in Citizen Electronics has recognized the importance of our intellectual property,” say Osram Opto Semiconductors’ CEO Dr Rüdiger Müller and Osram GmbH’s general counsel Gerd Pokorny.

In addition to signing the license agreement, Osram and Citizen are also discussing the possibility of cooperation.
