Handset shipments reached forecast of 1 billion units in 2006, says Strategy Analytics

Market research firm Strategy Analytics says that, as it first predicted last April, total mobile handset shipments reached 1 billion units globally during 2006. It has taken the industry 23 years to reach this milestone.

A record 300 million cell phones were shipped in Q4/2006, up 22% on a year earlier. Nokia passed 100 million units for the first time. Motorola gained 4 points of market share, but saw tumbling average selling price (ASP) and profit. Samsung’s share was marginally down, as was LG’s.

The star performer overall was Sony Ericsson, says Strategy Analytics. A combination of attractive models and cool sub-brands drove shipments to an all-time high. In terms of revenues, Sony Ericsson is now the third largest vendor, overtaking Samsung for the first time.

For 2007, Strategy Analytics now forecasts 1.1 billion units (up 12% on 2006).
