Osram’s Advanced Power TopLEDs used in Audi R8’s daytime running lights

In Audi’s new R8 sports car, 12 Advanced Power TopLEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors of Regensburg, Germany are used in each headlight to provide high-visibility daytime running lights that consume much less power than normal low-beam headlights. Osram Opto claims that the R8 is
the first serial production car with LED daytime running lights.

The introduction of mandatory daytime running light in many countries throughout Europe is giving vehicle manufacturers a further opportunity to differentiate their products from those of competitors via unique headlight designs, says the firm. Its Advanced Power TopLED provides concentrated light from very small dimensions and has an edge length of just 500µm, giving stylists freedom to create imaginative designs. Also, their high-temperature behavior meets the stringent requirements of the automobile industry for this application, the firm adds.

In the Advanced Power TopLED, white light is produced by a combination of Osram Opto’s ThinGaN technology and chip-level conversion (a yellow converter located directly on the blue-emitting chip – which is not the case with the frequently used volume encapsulation method).
This results in better optical efficiency and higher luminance (18lm at an operating current of 140mA, ranking between Osram Opto’s Power TopLEDs and Golden Dragon LEDs in brightness). The LEDs are housed in an SMT package and can be further processed by customers using standard
processes.

The Advanced Power TopLED will be available on the market with these specifications from mid-2007.

After its ENJOY show car and the Maserati Birdcage 75th concept car, designer Pininfarina has chosen to also use Power TopLEDs from Osram Opto Semiconductors in the daytime running lights of its Ferrari 612 P4/5, a Ferrari Enzo that it has re-modelled in the style of a 1967-era Ferrari 330 P3/4 sports racing car for collector James Glickenhaus of New York. The P4/5 by Pininfarina was first shown at the Concours d’Elégance in Pebble Beach, CA, USA, and introduced at the 2006 Paris Motor Show at the end of September.

“Design studies have shown how our LEDs can be used to create such individual solutions and exceptional designs,” said president and CEO Dr Rüdiger Müller. Osram Opto says that each of the P4/5’s headlights incorporate daytime running lights formed by 15 separate, clearly distinguishable lighting clusters (each fitted with eight Power TopLEDs), which follow the contours of the bodywork (giving the appearance of shark’s teeth). Each LED incorporates a ThinGaN chip, providing an efficiency of 40lm/W.
