Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc (RSTI) of Plymouth, MI, USA and Hamburg, Germany, which designs and manufactures laser sources and laser-based systems for industrial applications, has acquired Corelase Oy of Tampere, Finland.
Corelase was founded in 2003 by ex-staff of Tutcore, which was spun off from Tampere’s Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) in 1991(becoming Coherent Finland in 1998). Its product lines include PAM fiber-coupled diode laser systems, H-LASE and X-LASE continuous-wave and ultra-short-pulse mode-locked fiber laser systems, and D-LASE direct diode laser system s for material processing applications (welding, soldering, cutting, drilling etc).
Corelase has since expanded its presence in several Asian and European countries through exclusive agreements with distributors, including last month with Orsay-based Opton Laser International for France Corelase and with Azpect Photonics for Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In May 2006 Corelase agreed a US partnership with Ergolase Inc of Santa Clara, CA, USA to penetrate the North American market.
“This is an important acquisition for Rofin-Sinar, as we continue to broaden and deepen our technological portfolio," said RSTI’s CEO and president Gunther Braun. “We have been evaluating this technology for a long time.” The acquisition will strengthen RSTI’s position in the market for laser material processing, he adds.
In accord with Corelase’s principle of offering its products “on fair and equal terms to all customers regardless of the end application”, it will continue to operate as a stand-alone company and provide its products to other laser companies.
Last month RSTI’s Hamburg-based subsidiary Rofin-Sinar Laser GmbH, which makes solid-state lasers, CO2 lasers and diode lasers, acquired 80% of m2k-laser GmbH of Freiburg, Germany, which makes lasers based on gallium arsenide and gallium antimonide (mainly for scientific applications). m2k will likewise continue to operate as a stand-alone company and provide their products to other laser companies.
