At last week's OFC Conference in Anaheim, CA, USA, PhoXtal Communications AB of Kista, Sweden launched its monolithically integrated fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) Diplexer Array, which combines 4, 8 or 12 diplexers on a single indium phosphide-based chip of about 1mm2 in size.
The Diplexer Array is based on PhoXtal’s fabrication method for 1310/(1490)/1550nm bidirectional diplexers (triplexers) – the firm launched an FTTH Diplexer as its first transciever product at OFC 2005.
In each diplexer, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) functionality is achieved by integrating a wavelength-selective coupler designed for a large optical bandwidth, distributed feedback (DFB) laser transmitters emitting directly into the waveguides, and standard receivers consisting of waveguide photo-diodes (WG-PD). A Diplexer Array with 250 micron fiber attachment spacing is achieved by integrating a selected number of parallel diplexers on the same chip. Fabrication costs are reduced by using a single epitaxial growth layer.
Intended for implementation in quad (4-channel) small form-factor pluggable (QSFP) packages, the Diplexer Array can provide broadband access at up to 2.5Gb/s per channel over 10km or more of standard fiber cable. By connecting MPO-connectorized fiber arrays ( standard ribbons of 4, 8 or 12 single-mode fibers ) in a point-to-point FTTH installation directly into central office equipment, the port density of such equipment can be increased by a factor of three or more, says PhoXtal.
Other applications include Ethernet First Mile and short-haul WDM.
