Diamond Microwave Devices (DMD) of Ascot, UK has signed a contract which sees INEX provide the processing technology for its electronic component development programme.
A subsidiary of the UK’s Element Six Ltd (E6), DMD says it is working on next generation high-power, high temperature semiconductor devices for microwave power electronics, and adds that the new contract marks an important step in developing electronic devices fabricated in single crystal diamond synthesized using CVD.
Late last year, E6 and Filtronic of Newton Aycliffe, UK signed an agreement under which DMD and Filtronic collaborate on diamond-based microwave device technology.
Located within the University of Newcastle, INEX will work with DMD, E6 and Filtronic to develop processing techniques and to fabricate prototype devices based on E6’s proprietary diamond material and a device designed by Filtronic. The companies say that the initial aim is to demonstrate a practical MESFET (metal semiconductor field effect transistor) using CVD diamond grown by E6.
“The impressive facilities and expertise within E6, Filtronic and INEX should help us achieve our ambition of creating diamond MESFETs that could revolutionise the design of future microwave power modules,” said Richard Lang, DMD’s general manager.
“The collaboration with DMD gives us the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of next generation technology,” said Ken Snowdon, managing director of INEX.
