Osram launches flash LEDs for mobile phones and cameras

Osram Opto Semiconductors has developed two super-bright LEDs especially for flash lights.

The compact and efficient OSLUX, with its aspherical lens and a luminous efficacy of 48lm/W, has beam characteristics that are ideal for photo formats and provides homogeneous light right into the margins at a distance of 1-3m, says Osram. Illumination is optimized for rectangular photos. In the direct target area of 1.15mx0.87m it achieves more than 50lx. Good thermal properties, combined with short switching times, enable rapid flash
frequencies to be achieved and high-output operation with peak currents of 1500mA. The LED and lens can be handled in standard SMT solder processes at temperatures up to 260°C.

CERAMOS can be combined with various proprietary and customer-specific lenses, and offers great versatility for applications in which space is at a premium, e.g. in mobile phones, but high luminous intensity is still needed, says Osram. The lumen values correspond to those of the OSLUX; lux values depend on the lens used. With low thermal resistance and short switching times, CERAMOS can handle higher than normal currents and flash rapidly in
succession.

The two LEDs are based on a 1 mm2 ThinGaN chip and can be operated either in pulse mode or with a constant current. They provide high levels of brightness for low power consumption. Rapid flash frequencies make even small mobile terminals fit for short flash sequences or complete series of pictures.
