CST Global presenting at Photonics West on blue laser progress for atomic clocks
III-V optoelectronic foundry Compound Semiconductor Technologies Global Ltd (CST Global) of Hamilton International Technology Park, Blantyre, near Glasgow, Scotland, UK says that, at SPIE Photonics West 2019 in San Francisco, CA, USA (2-7 February), research engineer Dr Thomas Slight is giving a guest presentation ‘Recent progress in distributed feedback InGaN/GaN laser diodes’, providing an update on the UK government-funded CoolBlue projects (‘Quantum Cooling using Mode Controlled Blue Lasers’.
Led by Slight, these projects use next-generation gallium nitride (GaN) laser diodes for quantum sensing systems like atomic clocks.
“I will use Photonics West to provide an update on the next-generation GaN DFB [distributed feedback] lasers we are developing for ultra-cooling strontium ions, for use in quantum clocks,” says Slight. “A single-wavelength 422nm GaN DFB laser has now been successfully produced. This is the optimal wavelength for ultra-cooling strontium ions and represents a significant breakthrough in the project,” he adds.
“The CoolBlue laser diode source is more powerful, smaller and easier to make than conventional quantum clock sources,” continues Slight. “This makes it increasingly feasible to transform quantum sensors from ‘laboratory instruments’ into miniaturized, robust systems for a wide range of commercial applications.”
