II-VI Inc launches 25Gb/s detector chip arrays for active optical cables deployed in datacenters

Engineered materials and optoelectronic component maker II-VI Inc of Saxonburg, PA, USA (which provides solutions for next-generation optical networks) has announced general availability of its 25Gb/s detector chip arrays for active optical cables (AOCs) and transceivers deployed in datacenters.

The mainstream adoption of social media and cloud computing is fueling the growth of short-reach optical connectivity in datacenters. II-VI’s 25Gb/s detector chips enable 100Gb/s short-reach transmission in active optical cables and transceivers. The high-speed detectors feature large 40µm-diameter apertures that facilitate arrayed-receiver assembly manufacturing.

“In this fast-growing market for intra-datacenter interconnects, customers rely on few merchant suppliers of optoelectronics with large-scale manufacturing capabilities and a proven track record of reliability,” says Karlheinz Gulden, general manager of II-VI Laser Enterprise GmbH of Zurich, Switzerland. “We improved our ability to quickly respond to our customers with several new state-of-the-art MOCVD [metal-organic chemical vapor deposition] reactors that we recently brought online to increase the manufacturing capacity at our facilities in Zurich, where we already have a long history of producing highly reliable pump lasers for terrestrial and submarine applications,” he adds.

II-VI is now ramping up production of VCSEL and detector pairs. These chips are available in single-channel form or in 4-, 10- or 12-channel arrays. They are designed to operate at data rates of 10, 14 or 25Gb/s to support Ethernet and Fibre Channel standards in datacenters and storage area networks.

II-VI says that in booth #2101 at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition (OFC 2017) in Los Angeles (21-23 March) it will showcase new products driven by advances in its materials and technology platforms, including novel embedded monitoring solutions for transport networks, highly compact optical amplifier solutions tailored to enable high-bit-rate DWDM transceivers, as well as key devices and sub-assemblies for datacenter transceivers.
