Infinera and CenturyLink deliver 1.5Tb/s of super-channel DWDM capacity at Supercomputing 2015

Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical transport networking systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and global communications, hosting, cloud and IT services firm CenturyLink Inc of Monroe, LA, USA are delivering 1.5 terabits per second (Tb/s) of super-channel transmission capacity to support SCinet at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC15) in Austin, TX, USA (16-19 November).

The 1.5Tb/s of line-side capacity connects the Austin Convention Center to CenturyLink's global fiber-optic network, utilizing the Infinera DTN-X platform. The terabit deployment demonstrates rapid provisioning of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services from the conference to CenturyLink's point of presence in Austin and to six major US cities across the country.

Created each year for the Supercomputing conference, SCinet is said to be one of the world's most powerful networks, with infrastructure enabling a high-capacity network that supports the research applications and experiments taking place at the conference, connecting the Austin Convention Center to research and commercial networks around the world.

"This deployment demonstrates the power of CenturyLink's network and its ability to scale and quickly provide super-channel transmission capacity for real-time high-performance computing," says Pieter Poll, CenturyLink's senior VP of national and international network planning. "Providing SCinet with 1.5 terabit of transmission complements the work we are doing to transform our network and keep up with increasing bandwidth demands now and into the future."

CenturyLink operates a 250,000-route-mile US fiber network and a 300,000-route-mile international transport network, providing broadband, voice, video, data and managed services. Through a dedicated network connection, the firm delivers 100 GbE Optical Wavelength Service to enterprise customers; research, financial and educational institutions; and Internet content providers across the USA and in select international cities.

The DTN-X family is a key part of the Infinera Intelligent Transport Network, and includes the chassis-based XTC series and the new XT series. The DTN-X family was recently extended with the addition of Infinera's DTN-X XTC-2 and XTC-2E for metro applications as well as with the DTN-X XT-500, a new compact platform to address long-haul high-capacity point-to-point interconnect applications.

"Working with CenturyLink to dynamically deliver terabit capacity using the Infinera DTN-X across their backbone highlights Infinera's role in contributing to one of the largest networks in the US," says Bob Jandro, Infinera's senior VP, worldwide sales.
