Cree launches 3500lm TrueWhite LED arrays for retail spots

LED chip, lamp and lighting fixture maker Cree Inc of Durham, NC, USA has announced new TrueWhite LEDs, targeting previously untapped lighting applications such as high-performance retail spots.

Delivering a color rendering index (CRI) of more than 90 light at a luminous efficacy of more than 140 lumens per watt, TrueWhite LEDs are reckoned to be the first LED arrays to deliver 3500 lumens of high-quality light in the small 19mm light-emitting surface (LES) required for retail spots. Unlike previous LED solutions, says Cree, the new technology allows lighting manufacturers to develop LED spots without making trade-offs between color quality, light output, efficacy, lifetime or size.

"With an unmatched combination of high lumen output, high efficacy and high CRI in a small LES, Cree TrueWhite LEDs can enable lighting designers to deliver the benefits of ceramic metal halide (CMH) lighting without any of its disadvantages," claims Dave Emerson, VP & general manager for Cree LEDs. "This technology breakthrough, enabled by Cree's innovative SC5 Technology Platform, can both improve performance and lower system costs over existing solutions and can enable a new generation of LED lighting for applications with the highest light quality needs, such as retail, hospitality and healthcare," he claims. 

In booth #1657 at LIGHTFAIR International (LFI) in New York (5-7 May), Cree is giving a demonstration of the TrueWhite LEDs along with the firm's full portfolio of LED technology. The first TrueWhite LEDs will be commercially available by the end of summer.
