CenturyLink and Infinera delivering terabit capacity at Super Computing 2014

Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical network systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and CenturyLink Inc of Monroe, LA, USA (the third largest telecoms firm in the USA) are delivering 1 terabit per second (1Tb/s) of super-channel transmission capacity to support the SCinet network at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC14) in New Orleans (17-21 November).

Using the Infinera DTN-X platform, 1 terabit of capacity will connect the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to CenturyLink’s nationwide fiber-optic network. The terabit deployment will demonstrate the rapid provisioning of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services from the conference to CenturyLink’s network.

CenturyLink currently offers 100 GbE Optical Wavelength Service to research institutions and laboratories (including those at more than 150 US Department of Defense locations through a contract for the Defense Research and Engineering Network); financial and educational institutions; and Internet content providers. It is delivering these Ethernet services to enterprise customers across the USA and in select international cities through a dedicated network connection.

“This terabit deployment demonstrates the scale, reliability and efficiency of our network and complements the 100 Gigabit Ethernet services we have available to our customers today,” says Pieter Poll, senior VP of national and international network planning at CenturyLink. “The delivery of terabit capacity on SCinet demonstrates the rapid provisioning of services and the ability to turn up terabit capacity in minutes.”

SCinet is said to be one of the most powerful and advanced networks in the world, created each year for the Supercomputing Conference. This infrastructure creates a high-capacity network that supports the research applications and experiments taking place at the conference, connecting the New Orleans convention center to research and commercial networks around the world.
