Aixtron hosts seminar at SSL CHINA 2014 on developments in MOCVD technology
At the 11th China International Forum on Solid State Lighting (SSL CHINA 2014) in Guangzhou (6-8 November) – where representatives from industry, research and governmental organizations gathered to discuss recent developments and future trends in SSL – deposition equipment maker Aixtron SE of Herzogenrath near Aachen, Germany not only launched its AIX R6 production tool to a selected range of customers but also hosted a seminar on recent developments in metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) technology.
Seminar on MOCVD mass-production technology
At the MOCVD seminar, which was attended by more than 130 participants, Andreas Toennis (chief technology officer) discussed ‘Differentiators in a competitive LED manufacturing environment’ and professor Michael Heuken (VP of corporate R&D) presented ‘Planetary MOCVD technology as key enabler of power electronics mass production’.
Aixtron China Ltd general manager Tim Wang also welcomed representatives of high-level customers and key partners who spoke on different aspects regarding the application of Aixtron production technology. “We have been especially pleased about the support from our Chinese market leading customers San’an Optoelectronics and Elec-Tech and their presentations of current production results achieved with Aixtron technology,” Wang said. “Building close partnerships together with our customers is the key for our success,” he added.
“The reduction of cost per lumen is the key to be ahead of competition. Therefore 4-inch production becomes the choice, and the capacity increase in 2015 will be dominated by 4-inch,” noted Elec-Tech executive VP Dr Phil Wu in his speech, pointing to coming trends in epiwafer production. “In this area Aixtron’s Close Coupled Showerhead technology is the leading solution in our opinion,” he added.
“Aixtron’s G4-TM Planetary tool has enabled stable mass production of high brightness LEDs. It also delivers good LED properties even when growth rates were increased,” stated Chaoyu Wu, vice general manager of San’an Optoelectronics Co Ltd, who stressed the high quality of the G4 in the production of aluminium gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP)-based LEDs.
Launch of AIX R6 MOCVD system
After the seminar, Aixtron officially launch its AIX R6 next-generation MOCVD system at an event attended by high-level representatives from customers plus members of Aixtron’s senior management. “The AIX R6 sets new standards in LED manufacturing and thereby, enables the SSL industry to climb the next level of competitiveness,” said president & CEO Martin Goetzeler. “More than 30% lower cost of ownership and 120% higher throughput offer a significant surplus to our customers.”
SSL development award
At SSL CHINA 2014, Wu Ling – president of the International Solid State Lighting Alliance (ISA) – recognized Aixtron with the ‘Award of Outstanding Achievement for Global SSL Development’ for its contributions to the establishment of the SSL industry. “For 30 years, we have been an important bridge between research, development and the application of technologies by introducing a number of innovative tools to the SSL and general lighting industry,” said Goetzeler in his acceptance speech.
Near future of the SSL industry
The SSL CHINA conference closed with Toennis, together with representatives of other manufacturers, discussing the mid-term perspectives of the solid-state lighting industry. All panelists agreed that the industry will face huge challenges in the years to come. “Information technology will emerge as an important driving force in the SSL industry, and new applications for the LED technology will be developed,” said Toennis. “Therefore, close relationships to customers and partners will become even more important. At Aixtron, we are looking forward to that development and we will continue to actively support it,” he concluded.
