Source Photonics launches low-power-consumption GPON and EPON SFP optical network units with DPoE OAM

At the Optical Fiber Communication/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2013) in Anaheim (19-21 March), optical communication product maker Source Photonics Inc of Chatsworth, CA, USA has launched two new SFP optical network units (ONUs) with embedded MAC (media access controller) for applications in Gigiabit passive optical network (GPON) operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) and DOCSIS provisioning of Ethernet passive optical network (EPON), i.e. DPoE.

The 1.25Gbps bi-directional EPON ONU with MAC is part of the DPoE architecture developed for upgrading a CATV point-to-point system to EPON using existing DOCSIS-based back-office systems and processes. The ONU is in MSA-compliant SFP form-factor and is designed to simply plug into a standard SFP port in the customer premises equipment (CPE). The product offers ‘plug-and-play’ capability via the auto discovery and configuration feature for ease of use. The ONU also features multiple functions including VLAN support, ONU certification, IGMP snooping, traffic management, clock synchronization, rogue ONU detection, and Dying Gasp indication. The transceiver is fully compliant with IEEE 802.3ah standards and supports DPoE v1.0 OAM for CMTS (cable modem termination system) platform applications, as well as optional GE/FE (Gigabit Ethernet/Fast Ethernet) serializer/deserializer (SerDes) UNI and Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface (SGMII) UNI.

The GPON ONU with MAC integrates GPON OMCI Stack and is fully compliant with ITU-T G.984 standards. The GPON SFP-ONU product offers the same expanded feature set as the EPON product, and allows interconnection of a standard Ethernet SFP port to a PON network, in a broad range of network applications including wireless backhaul and FTTx.

“With 1.5W maximum power dissipation, the SFP-ONU is designed with feedback from key customers and partners to meet their needs in addressing fast-growing segments such as business services,” says Zachary Lu, senior director of product line management. “It also meets China EPON standard OAM control specifications,” he adds.
