Cyprus deploys Infinera DTN-X platform for 100G Mediterranean subsea network

Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical network systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta), have announced the deployment of Infinera’s DTN-X platform, featuring 500Gb/s long-haul super-channels, across the TE-North Cable System (which interconnects Asia and Africa to Europe). Infinera says that Cyta selected the DTN-X platform to deliver commercial services due to its scalability, efficiency, simplicity and reliability.

Cyta is the primary telecoms provider in Cyprus, providing the full spectrum of electronic communications services ranging from fixed and mobile telephony to internet service provision and broadband applications. It operates and maintains the ALEXANDROS subsystem, part of Telecom Egypt’s TE-North Cable System (which stretches 3600km connecting Abu Talat in Egypt to Marseilles in France, with a branch to Pentaskhinos, Cyprus). Deployment of the DTN-X platform will allow Cyta to add additional capacity to the ALEXANDROS subsystem, with the ability to upgrade TE North’s terrestrial network in the future, in order to serve global operators relying on Cyta to offer services in the Middle East, Asia and Africa region.

“We are confident the Infinera DTN-X delivers the most advanced optical transport platform based on 500Gb/s photonic integrated circuits,” comments Yiannis Koulias, Cyta’s director of National & International Wholesale Market. “The FlexCoherent technology will allow us to optimize transmission performance across our existing subsea fiber plant and meet the demands of our customers quickly and efficiently,” he adds.

Infinera is the first to deliver 500Gb/s long-haul super-channels based on PICs and the FlexCoherent Processor, scaling transport capacity without scaling operational complexity. Infinera’s PICs combine multiple optical subsystems on a single IC and result in fewer fiber connections, less space and less power when compared to conventional systems based upon discrete components, the firm claims. The DTN-X increases network efficiency with 5 Terabits of integrated OTN switching per bay, resulting in much more efficient utilization compared with conventional WDM architectures that do not allow sub-lambda grooming and switching. Also, Infinera’s Bandwidth Virtualization simplifies service deployment, enabling operators to deploy networks in days and services in minutes, lowering operational costs.
