Opnext demos 100Gbps coherent OIF MSA module interoperability
Optical module and component maker Opnext Inc of Fremont, CA, USA says that its 100Gbps coherent module has demonstrated full optical line-side interoperability with modules from both a module vendor and a system vendor, validating the work done within the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) to define fully interoperable 100Gbps DP-QPSK MSA (multi-source agreement) modules. Opnext expects to release its first OTM-100 product in the quarter to end-June.
The 100Gbps digital coherent signal processing LSI (DSP-LSI) in Opnext’s digital signal processor is manufactured by NTT Electronics Corp, and the DSP-LSI incorporates the outcome of ‘R&D on High Speed Optical Transport System Technologies’ supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan.
“We are pleased to see our developed 100Gbps DSP chips are contributing to leading optical module vendors such as Opnext to help nurture the ecosystem that is essential to commercialize 100Gbps coherent deployments around the world,” says Dr Masahito Tomizawa, group leader, supervisor of NTT Network Innovation Labs.
Opnext has started the integration and testing of NTT’s second version of the DSP-LSI chips, which is expected to enable reduced power consumption for Opnext's next release of the OTM-100 100Gbps coherent OIF MSA module. The firm expects this second release to occur during the quarter to end-September.
Results of the interoperability testing are being presented during the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2012) in Los Angeles (6-8 March). The presentation, by Dr Tomizawa, is part of the MarketWatch ‘Entering the 100G Era’ panel on Thursday 8 March (1-3pm PT).
