Infinera gives first public demo of 2Tb/s small-form-factor DTN-X platform
At the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2012) in Los Angeles (4-8 March), Infinera Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA, a vertically integrated manufacturer of digital optical network systems incorporating its own indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs), is giving the first public demonstration of its 2Tb/s small-form-factor DTN-X platform.
The firm is featuring the Infinera Express mobile demonstration lab, showcasing its latest digital optical networking solutions designed for Terabit communications. It will display a pair of DTN-X platforms configured with 500Gb/s FlexCoherent super-channels.
Infinera is also giving the first public demonstration of the half-rack small-form-factor XTC-4 chassis with 2Tb/s of integrated OTN switching and simulating typical high-bandwidth transport links on customer networks. The XTC-4 provides a DTN-X-class solution in a smaller form factor for operators that have space constraints or a need for lower total chassis capacity. The DTN-X platform in a full-rack XTC-10 chassis with 5Tb/s of integrated OTN switching was demonstrated last September. Both the XTC-4 and XTC-10 are planned for availability in first-half 2012.
The Infinera Express is also showcasing the DTN platform, which interoperates with the DTN-X for cost-effective service delivery. Both the DTN and DTN-X have an 8th-generation common intelligent GMPLS control plane along with a common DNA management system for rapid service turn-up via point-and-click provisioning, auto-discovery and automated service restoration.
The DTN-X platform is claimed to be the industry’s only super-channel dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution based on 500Gb/s PICs. It also integrates OTN switching and a GMPLS control plane without any performance compromise. The PICs integrate more than 600 optical functions (traditionally implemented on discrete components) onto a pair of chips, which significantly improves reliability, increases system density and reduces power consumption. They deliver the first 500Gb/s FlexCoherent super-channels based on 100Gb/s channels, giving service providers a network that scales for the future, is simple to operate (enabling agile service deployment), and efficiently uses fiber resources.
At OFC/NFOEC, Infinera’s executives and engineers are making presentations addressing new developments in technologies that enable next-generation optical networking solutions, including photonic integration and coherent transmission.
On Monday 5 March, co-founder & chief strategy officer Dr David Welch is presenting ‘Disruptive Technologies: What to PIC?’. Also, VP of development & manufacturing Fred Kish is speaking during the workshop ‘Optical Component Technology’.
On Thursday 8 March, KuangTsan Wu, an Infinera Fellow and an architect of coherent transmission, is speaking on ‘Techniques in Carrier Recovery for Optical Systems’, VP of product marketing Antti Kankkunen is speaking on the panel ‘Photonic Integration in Long Haul Transport Networks’, and Han Sun, senior principal engineer focused on coherent algorithms, is speaking on ‘Clock Recovery and Jitter Sources in Coherent Transmission’.
