RFMD responds to Peregrine’s patent infringement claim

RF Micro Devices Inc of Greensboro, NC, USA, which designs and manufactures radio-frequency components and compound semiconductor technologies, has responded to the filing of a patent infringement lawsuit by Peregrine Semiconductor Corp of San Diego, CA, USA relating to radio-frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) and switching technology.

Peregrine, a fabless provider of RFICs based on silicon-on-sapphire (SOS), filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC) and a lawsuit in the US District Court for the Central District of California alleging the infringement of certain patents relating to RFICs and switching technology by both RFMD and Motorola Mobility Inc. The complaint claims that certain RFMD products and certain Motorola Mobility smartphones infringe Peregrine patents relating to silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology for RFICs. It seeks, among other remedies, an exclusion order preventing the importation and sale of infringing products in the USA. The lawsuit alleges the same infringement and seeks, in addition to damages, to permanently enjoin RFMD and Motorola Mobility from further infringement.

RFMD says that it has a strong intellectual property portfolio relating to RFICs and switching technology that it has developed over many years, and it intends to vigorously defend its position in the lawsuit.

The firm asserts that it respects the intellectual property rights of others and takes care to avoid infringements. It adds that it is fully committed to its entire product portfolio, and all products will continue to be provided to RFMD’s customers without interruption while the lawsuit is being contested.
