First Solar extends CdTe PV module material and workmanship warranty to 10 years

At the 26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC 2011) in Hamburg, Germany, First Solar Inc of Tempe, AZ, USA, which makes thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules based on cadmium telluride (CdTe), announced that it has extended its material and workmanship warranty from five to ten years.

The new warranty covers First Solar’s Series 3 modules as of 1 October, and demonstrates the firm’s commitment to product quality and reliability, it is claimed. First Solar's thin-film technology has been deployed in some of the largest photovoltaic projects to date, such as the 80MW Sarnia project in Ontario, Canada.

“As one of the world's largest solar module manufacturers, we understand the need for a low-risk product that is backed by a comprehensive warranty,” says Stephan Hansen, managing director of First Solar GmbH of Mainz, Germany. “In addition to the extended workmanship warranty, First Solar modules are covered by a 25-year power performance warranty — both of which enable us to meet the evolving needs of our global customers,” he adds.

First Solar’s modules are also covered by the company’s pre-funded collection and recycling program.
