Microelectronics segment poised for strong 2011

With consumer demand for sophisticated electronic devices sparking a surge in new product announcements, Strategy Analytics foresees 2011 growth for the microelectronics segment of the compound semiconductor industry in its recently published viewpoint ‘Compound Semiconductor Industry Review December 2010: Microelectronics’.

The viewpoint captures the product, technology, contract, financial and employment announcements for manufacturers including RFMD, Skyworks Solutions, TriQuint Semiconductor, Avago Technologies, Freescale Semiconductor and Cree, addressing commercial and military applications using gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), silicon germanium (SiGe) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies.

“Rapid consumer adoption of smart-phones and tablets is creating a wave of innovation and product development in the compound semiconductor industry,” notes Eric Higham, director of the Strategy Analytics GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies Service. “The December announcements serve to re-affirm our view that the industry will see continued growth in 2011,” he adds.

“The financial results from compound semiconductor device suppliers have been strong throughout the year,” comments Asif Anwar, director in the Strategy Analytics Strategic Technologies Practice. “Now several foundries are implementing plans to increase capacity,” he adds.
