Kyma to support Veeco in DOE-funded LED manufacturing equipment development project
Kyma Technologies Inc of Raleigh, NC, USA, which provides crystalline gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) materials and related products and services, is teaming with Veeco Instruments Inc of Plainview, NY in an LED manufacturing equipment development project that was recently awarded $4m in funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE).
Epitaxial deposition and process equipment maker Veeco is receiving $4m in funding for a project targeted at lowering the manufacturing costs and improving the brightness and efficiency of LEDs by using novel materials, substrates, and deposition technologies. Kyma will supply material and services to Veeco as part of this development project.
On 7 June, US Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced nearly $15m in funding to support eight new R&D projects that will accelerate the development and deployment of high-efficiency solid-state lighting technologies such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The projects selected are located in four states across the country and are focused on advancing core R&D goals, developing new products, and expanding domestic manufacturing capacity to help the USA to remain competitive in this growing technology market.
“The Veeco and Kyma team’s project is an excellent example of a research investment that ensures our future economic competitiveness,” comments US Congressman David Price (4th District of North Carolina).
