GigOptix samples LX8220 TFPS modulator for 40G DQPSK
After deployment of its first productized Thin Film Polymer on Silicon (TFPS) Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) last year (the LX8401, for 40G DPSK), GigOptix Inc of Palo Alto, CA, USA, which designs modulator drivers, laser drivers and transimpedance amplifier (TIA) ICs based on III-V materials as well as polymer electro-optic modulators, has expanded its range by sampling the LX8220, strengthening its position in the fast-growing 40G differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) modulation market.
The LX8220 is a small-form-factor, low-power-consumption modulator designed for use in 40G metro, long-haul and ultra-long-haul optical transport applications. The modulator uses GigOptix's proprietary TFPS technology to provide what is claimed to be the lowest-power, smallest-footprint modulator on the market.
In a recent report on 100G and 40G components, Ovum forecasted that the 40G DQPSK dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) market would grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66% to more than 68,000 units by 2015.
