At the electronica 2010 trade fair in Munich (9–12 November), Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH of Regensburg, Germany will be showcasing LEDs, infrared (IR) and laser components for a variety of applications in the commercial, industrial and residential sectors.
The versatility of LEDs has already led to some memorable designs, such as the front lighting on the Audi A8, says Osram Opto. IR components can provide breathtaking 3D effects through the interaction of a backlit LED TV and shutter glasses. Miniaturized projectors need laser or LED light sources to achieve high output and brilliant colors. Meanwhile, panel lights as style elements are setting new standards in room lighting.
Osram Opto’s whole booth at electronica will be illuminated by 200 LED spotlights, each equipped with 44 of the latest high-power LEDs in the firm’s OSLON family. There are 22 LEDs in cold white and 22 in warm white, so the lighting mood can be changed to suit particular needs. Visitors can experiment to see how the light color and brightness can be controlled individually with the aid of LEDs.
“The wide variety of applications from so many different walks of life clearly shows that LEDs — with their numerous benefits such as energy efficiency, long life and eco-friendly design — now offer excellent options in general illumination,” says marcom manager Martina Opitz.
This also applies to street lighting – various luminaires at the booth demonstrate the variety of designs and the high output levels that LEDs can deliver. A particular highlight is a luminaire that uses infrared sensors to adjust the brightness of the LEDs to ambient conditions and is therefore capable of making significant energy savings.
The conference room at the booth is equipped with a wall of diffused light. The 1m x 2m plastic panels look like a transparent glass wall when they are switched off but, as soon as they are switched on, about 7500 OSLON SSL 80 LEDs inject their white light into the plastic. Light is therefore not just providing brightness but also a design element.
Osram Opto says that its booth concept continues its cooperation with the architects Bachmann-Kern & Partner, who designed the booth for electronica 2008 that won the Gold ADAM Award in 2009.
