Anadigics’ PAs chosen for Samsung’s GALAXY Tab
Broadband wireless and wireline communications component maker Anadigics Inc of Warren, NJ, USA says that its power amplifiers (PAs) have been selected by Samsung for its highly anticipated GALAXY Tab product.
The AWC6323 is used in the Samsung GALAXY Tab offered by Sprint and Verizon Wireless in the USA, and the AWU6601 in the Samsung GALAXY Tab in the Korean market. Manufactured on InGaP HBT MMIC technology (offering high reliability, temperature stability and ruggedness), both PAs are part of the Anadigics’ High-Efficiency-at-Low-Power (HELP) portfolio of products for 3G devices.
Based on the Android Operating System, the GALAXY Tab is Samsung’s first tablet computing device and is part of its new portfolio of mobile products. A 7-inch TFT-LCD display allows a wide variety of mobile applications, including watching TV and movies, viewing photos, browsing the web, playing games, e-book reading and document sharing. It is also one of the first tablets on the market to have two (front-facing & rear) cameras. Anadigics says that its high-efficiency PAs help to extend the Tab's battery life.
“The Samsung GALAXY Tab is one of the most impressive mobile devices available today,” says Anadigics’ president & CEO Mario Rivas. “We continue to strengthen our long-standing relationship [with Samsung] by providing high-quality wireless computing solutions,” he adds.
The AWC6323 is the first Anadigics HELP3E dual-band CDMA PA in a 3mm x 5mm x 1mm footprint, supporting the Cell (824–849MHz) and PCS (1850–1910MHz) bands. The AWC6323 offers three mode states to achieve high power-added efficiencies at several power levels during operation. Featuring what is claimed to be the industry’s lowest quiescent current for a CDMA power amplifier, it plays an integral role in extending battery life and improving the overall performance of mobile devices, says the firm. The device features built-in directional couplers for each band with a common coupler port, helping to eliminate surface-mount couplers from the board. It also meets the stringent linearity requirements of CDMA EV-DO Revisions A and B modulations to offer very high data rates for smart phones and data cards.
The AWU6601 incorporates Anadigics’ HELP3 technology to provide low power consumption without the need for an external voltage regulator. A ‘daisy-chainable’ directional coupler is integrated in the module, eliminating the need for external couplers and thus simplifying the device board layouts. The self-contained 3mm x 3mm x 1mm surface-mount package incorporates matching networks optimized for output power, efficiency and linearity. Optimized for a 50W system, the AWU6601 is HSPA compliant and features simple calibration with only two bias modes. Quiescent current is just 8mA, and leakage current in shutdown mode is less than 1 mA.
