Opnext and Sumitomo to give world’s first public demonstration of 40GBASE-LR4 interoperability

Opnext Inc of Eatontown, NJ, USA and Japan’s Sumitomo Electric Industries will host the first live public demonstration of multi-vendor interoperability of the soon to be released 40Gigabit Ethernet IEEE standard. The demonstration will take place on the Opnext booth (#802), at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2010) in San Diego, CA, USA (23–25 March).

The Sumitomo Electric and Opnext 40GBASE-LR4 pluggable optics based upon the CFP MSA will transmit and receive data error free over a 10km span of single mode fiber, say the firms.

“We are very pleased to showcase the interoperability of Sumitomo’s and Opnext’s 40GbE CFP transceivers. Carrier’s bandwidth requirements continue to increase rapidly forcing the need for 40GbE interfaces in their switches, routers, and transmission equipment,” said Rich Zoccolillo, president of Opnext’s pluggable business unit.

“Sumitomo Electric has been actively supporting higher speed Ethernet solutions in standards committees and industry forums,” stated Ichiro Kono, general manager of Optical Components Division, Sumitomo Electric Device Innovations. “We are excited to host this live demonstration of 40 Gigabit Ethernet with Opnext.”
