Japan’s Nichia Corp says that it will start shipping green gallium nitride (GaN)-based semiconductor laser diodes from August. Estimated life-time is 10,000 hours under continuous-wave (cw) operation at a power of 50mW and at a case temperature of 60°C.
Nichia claims that, compared with conventional light sources (e.g. for pico-projector applications), the green laser diode has advantages including low power consumption, small volume, high efficiency and low cost.
