According to a report by Ken Liu in the Taiwan Economic Times, speculation is mounting that LED chipmaker Epistar Inc of Taiwan is to sign an LED related patent cross-licensing agreement with its Japanese counterparts Nichia and/or Toyoda Gousei in an effort to boost revenue. Furthermore, insiders believe that the AUO Group, the Hon Hai Group and Formosa Epitaxy Inc are also planning to sign similar agreements with the two Japanese firms.
The report adds that Taiwan’s industry watchers welcome such a deal, as it will offer application providers peace of mind when using Epistar’s chips.
