Fabless semiconductor firm RFaxis Inc of Irvine, CA, USA, which was founded in January 2008 to design RF semiconductors and embedded antenna solutions for the wireless and connectivity markets, has recruied Dr Yongxi Qian as director of strategic marketing, product planning and application engineering for what is claimed to be the first RF front-end integrated circuits (RFeICs), which are based on BiCMOS silicon.

Qian has over 15 years of extensive research, teaching and product development experience in RF, microwave and millimeter-wave engineering, and the wireless communications industry. He was most recently director of RF Engineering at Microsemi Corp’s AMSG Group, where he played a key role in establishing GaAs MMIC design groups serving the wireless local-area network (WLAN) industry. A senior member of the IEEE and author/co-author of over a half dozen books/book chapters and more than 200 publications, Qian has won technical awards including IEEE IMS and European EuMC Paper Awards, a NASA Class I Award and a Japan Microwave Prize. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, Japan.

Rfaxis’ patent-pending RFeIC integrate the power amplifier (PA), low-noise amplifier (LNA), transmit and receive switching circuitry, the associated matching network, and the harmonic filter, all in a single-chip, single-die device. RFaxis claims that the RFeICs combine superior performance, high sensitivity and efficiency, low noise, small form factor, and low cost for applications requiring low power, extended range and bandwidth, and small form factor.
