HelioVolt recruits former First Solar chief operating officer as CEO

HelioVolt Corp of Austin, TX, USA, which makes thin-film copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) solar cells and modules, has recruited Jim Flanary as CEO.

Flanary brings expertise in growing high-tech manufacturing businesses at both large and small companies. As chief operating officer of First Solar from 2001 to 2003, Flanary implemented the core manufacturing process methodologies that allowed it to rapidly scale up its cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic module production while addressing early product quality issues. Most recently at HelioSphera, he was responsible for helping the newly established micromorph thin-film module manufacturer bring up its operations in Tripolis, Greece.

Flanary has also held roles such as president of OEA Aerospace and president of Networks Electronic Corp. During more than 10 years at ITT Night Vision (which makes military and commercial night-vision products), he developed operational skills in robust engineering, six sigma, and lean manufacturing, becoming division president & general manager.

“HelioVolt is one of a small number of CIGS companies positioned for commercial scale-up,” says Scott Sandell, general partner at New Enterprise Associates and member of HelioVolt’s board of directors. HelioVolt is developing a suite of CIGS photovoltaic products suitable for a variety of applications, including commercial rooftops and building-integrated (BIPV) systems. Its first factory in Austin is gearing up for production in second-half 2009.

“HelioVolt has developed a unique method [named FASST] for rapid manufacturing of advanced solar technology with potential to reach module efficiencies comparable with polysilicon modules and at competitive installed costs,” says founder & chief strategy officer Dr Billy J. Stanbery (CEO until February, and superseded by interim CEO & board member Ron Bernal of Sequel Ventures). “Jim brings a unique combination of entrepreneurial drive and operational capabilities with solid business growth experience that aligns him well with our plan to deliver the most efficient and cost-effective products to the market,” he adds. “His knowledge of the solar market and expertise in building companies will be invaluable,” says Sandell.

“The market has seen the potential of thin-film technology in the past two years and I believe HelioVolt has the next-generation technology and process that will allow our customers and partners to reach new levels of commercial growth,” says Flanary.
