At this week’s IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS 2009) in Boston, Avago Technologies of San Jose, CA, USA introduced a pair of 2W and 4W power amplifiers in low-cost surface-mount (SMT) packages for Ka-band very small aperture terminal (VSAT) ground terminal applications.
The AMMP-6413/6415, which provide high linearity, are fully monolithic power amplifiers in a 5mm x 5mm SMT package. Both provide high efficiency to help reduce power consumption and the need for heat dissipation. Moreover, these features suit use as last-stage power amplifiers in systems that require increased linearity for high-data-rate transmission.
Avago says that VSAT device designers are continually looking for low-cost PAs that are highly reliable and offer a high dynamic range (better output power, gain, and linearity) to fulfill the growing demand for commercial and enterprise internet over satellite applications. In addition, a growing number of VSAT customers are moving towards surface-mount technology to reduce assembly cost through automation. Avago says that its AMMP-6413/6415 PAs were developed to address this design need.
The 2W AMMP-6413 and 4W AMMP-6415 MMICs are designed for Ku-band VSAT transmitters that operate at frequencies of 13.75-14.5GHz. In the operational band, these PAs provide 33dBm and 36dBm of output power, respectively, and 29dB of small-signal gain.
Pricing for the AMMP-6413 and AMMP-6415 starts from $20 and $25, respectively, in 10,000 unit volumes.
