RFMD launches GPS LNA module with integrated SAW filter

RF Micro Devices Inc of Greensboro, NC, USA has announced the availability of samples and pre-production quantities (at $0.70 each in quantities of 10,000 units) of the RF2815 - a GPS low-noise amplifier (LNA) module with integrated filter designed for use in global positioning system receivers. The highly integrated RF2815 is optimized for both solution size and performance and is especially suited to battery-powered mobile devices such as portable navigation devices (PNDs) and GPS-enabled CDMA handsets.

The RF2815 integrates a low noise-figure LNA, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter and supporting components in a compact 3.3mm x 2mm.1 x 1.0mm, ROHS-compliant module. The LNA module delivers a lower profile and lower external component count than available competing solutions, it is claimed, addressing the shrinking size requirements of existing space-constrained mobile devices.

The RF2815 also features what is claimed to be an optimal combination of low noise-figure (0.85dB typical), high gain (13.5dB), high linearity (an IIP3 of +8dBm) and low power consumption (all critical performance attributes for battery-operated, GPS-enabled mobile devices). The RF2815 includes a CMOS-compatible shutdown mode. Current consumption is tunable via a single resistor, and there is no need for external DC-blocking capacitors

In addition, the cellular- and PCS-band rejection characteristics of the integrated SAW filter equip the RF2815 for non-concurrent and simultaneous GPS (S-GPS) operation, both of which are implemented in GPS-enabled CDMA handsets.

“The majority of today’s CDMA handsets incorporate GPS functionality, and location-based services continue to gain in popularity in smart phones and in other mobile devices,” says Paul Augustine, general manager of RFMD’s Component Solutions business unit. The RF2815 is first in a line of new RFMD products addressing this expanding market segment. “It leverages our leadership in GaAs pHEMT and packaging technologies and signals our entry into surface acoustic wave filter integration in our front-end products,” he adds.
