Avago introduces PAs for WiMAX and next-generation cellular applications

Avago Technologies of San Jose, CA, USA has introduced two power amplifier (PA) product families for next generation cellular (GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA) and WiMAX applications: the MGA-30116/-30216/-30316 family of half watt base station PAs and the ALM-42316 low voltage PA for mobile handset and fixed terminals.

The new ultra small WiMAX PAs are fully matched and designed for the entire chain of WiMAX product design needs, from mobile handsets to customer premise equipment (CPE) and base stations, says the company.

Delivering 23 dBm linear output power (2.5% EVM at 64 QAM OFDM) and a high gain of 30 dB when operated at 3.3V and 400 mA, Avago’s ALM-42316 has a built-in detector, bypass switch and shutdown function. The PA is designed for (802.16e) mobile terminals operating in the 3.3-3.8 GHz frequency band, and is housed in a 5 x 5 x 1.1mm molded chip-on-board (MCOB) package. It will be released to the market by the end of April 2008.

The MGA-30x16 family of PAs provide very high linearity and exceptional PAE (power added efficiency) at 1 dB gain compression point, say the company, enabling a common footprint and PCB layout for base station applications ranging from 750 MHz to 3.9 GHz. The MGA-30x16 family of PAs is housed in a 3 x 3 x 0.85mm 16-pin quad-flat-non-lead (QFN) package.

In quantities of 1,000 to 9,999, pricing for the MGA-30116, -30216 and -30316 begins at $2.81, and $3.13 for the ALM-42316.
