SemiSouth opens HQ for sales, marketing and design

SemiSouth Laboratories Inc, which designs and manufactures silicon carbide-based electronic devices and epiwafer materials for high-power, high-efficiency, harsh-environment power management and conversion applications, has opened its new corporate headquarters in Austin, TX.

SemiSouth was spun off from SiC R&D activities at the Mississippi State University (MSU) in 2000, and since August 2006 has been based at its 20,000 square foot MSU-owned manufacturing facility in Starkville, MS. Complementing this, the new headquarters in Austin will provide the office space to support SemiSouth’s infrastructure and business needs for growth over the next 12 months.

Austin is a vibrant high-tech community, says CEO Vess Johnson. As well as being the capital of Texas and the 16th largest city in the USA, Austin is home to the main campus of the University of Texas (the USA’s fifth largest university) as well as many high-tech companies. Its thriving semiconductor and computer industries are rapidly earning the city the nickname ‘Silicon Hills’, says SemiSouth. “We believe this will enhance our ability to expand and to draw key talent to SemiSouth,” reckons Johnson.

SemiSouth’s plans are to move sales and marketing to Austin immediately and to grow the Austin group by staffing a design center, starting in early 2008.
