Fraunhofer ISE’s director appointed to SEMI’s international board

In response to the growing involvement of its members in energy and photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing, industry association Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) of San Francisco, CA, USA - following its recent annual policy & planning board meeting - has added to its international board of directors by appointing Eicke Weber, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and a professor of physics and applied sciences at the Albert-Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany.

“Dr Weber is a highly regarded materials scientist and an avid proponent of renewable energy,” says SEMI’s president and CEO Stanley T. Myers. “In addition to his deep technical understanding of silicon technology, his perspective and expertise in solar energy will greatly contribute to our board’s ability to address SEMI members’ growing interest in the field,” he adds. “Photovoltaic manufacturing and other energy-related markets are key opportunities for a significant number of SEMI member companies that provide the advanced manufacturing technologies and materials to enable microelectronics, PVs, displays, MEMS and related products.” In January, SEMI established the SEMI PV Group to enhance member support in the critically important and high-growth area of photovoltaics.

Prior to joining Fraunhofer ISE, Weber spent 23 years at the University of California at Berkeley, during which time he served as a professor of materials science and, most recently, chair of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Graduate Group. He and his research group have published over 580 papers, and he is co-editor of the Academic Press book series ‘Semiconductors and Semimetals’. In 1997, Weber was a founding member of the ‘Silicon Wafer Engineering and Defect Science’ consortium.

Weber joins the SEMI’s 18 voting board members, four non-voting ex-officio and nine emeritus directors. He will serve an initial two-year board term and be eligible for subsequent re-election by regular ballot of SEMI’s global membership.
